Pool League
History of the Pool League

Teutonia Männerchor Pool League (1986) -- Left to Right: Vince Malone, Bob Knaus, Henry Horst, Eric Whitten, Frank Forest, Joel Williamson (kneeling), Mike Nolder, Frank Scharl, Fred Kunz and Jim McCollam.
The year was 1983. A small group of Teutonia men decided to have a pool tournament. The format was to be an “8″ ball competition, consisting of two vs. two players for a set of three games on each night. The partners were changed each week, as were the opponents. The length of the tournament was twelve weeks. The tournament began in the fall of the year. There were twelve participants in the tournament.
That was then. Today, twenty three years later, the tournament has become a seventeen week league with twenty four members. The competition consists of fifteen weeks of play, preceded by an annual kick-off night and followed by an awards night. The league awards trophies for the top three finishers; these are presented at the final event. The awards night is typically a lavish extravaganza of food and drink for all the league members.
During the course of the season, we have special nights to embellish the peripheral enjoyment of the participation in the league. We have “Tuxedo Night”, a night in which the players are attired in full tuxedo splendor to emulate the actual professional Billiard Tournaments. In addition we have a “Western Night”, a night where we dress in cowboy outfits including boots, hats, and sometimes even chaps. We also attend the Pirates opening home game every year. We have had tournaments with outside groups such as the Iron City Beer Pool league and the American Legion Post 712, and proudly, we held our own.
The best part of participating in this league has been the camaraderie and friendships that have developed among the players. Many of the men openly confess to this pool league being a major factor in their entire social life. The members are from all walks of life from steel workers, lawyers, boilermakers, bankers, businessmen, architects and engineers. If you have the opportunity to watch them play, all you will see is a bunch guys having fun and enjoying each others company.
The club has provided a venue and maintained the opportunity for the existence of this pool league for the past twenty + years, and for this, the members are truly appreciative and grateful.
